synfig studio crashes on startup

Binary package hint: synfigstudio

Synfig GUI crashes on startup. The splash screen shows up, and then goes away, and that's all you see.

The last entry on the splash screen seems to be 'Init MetaData...'

I really hope that the fix for this gets into the repositories. Synfig is totally useless without it.
