Bug Description

Binary package hint: synergy

Synergy2 is old and buggy, in particular facing problems around the clipboard and typically crashing frequently.

It has not been updated since 2006. However, a small number of forks exist of which the most active appears to be synergy-plus:
http://code.google.com/p/synergy-plus/

There is a Windows installer but it retains cross-platform support in the source, which is trivial to build on Ubuntu following the instructions in their wiki. It retains compatibility with existing configuration files and is a drop-in replacement, but one which is being maintained.

The current version is 1.3.3, which is not a huge step up from 1.3.1 currently in Ubuntu so adopting it now is not a major undertaking.

Therefore Ubuntu should consider replacing synergy 1.3.1 with synergy-plus 1.3.3

Hi,

I've packaged latest Synergy+ for karmic.
It can be found on my PPA: https://launchpad.net/~eugenesan/+archive/ppa

I'll check that option.

This is a great idea. I had so many problems with synergy (crashes, garbage in copy-paste, asserts, hangs where the whole machine was hung until I ssh'd into the box and "killall syner" etc). Besides that, synergy is relatively hard to configure (even if you're using the quicksynergy package) compared to other packages. Finally, the fact that the default config sends everything over the network unencrypted is certainly less than ideal.

hi,

I checked related bug http://code.google.com/p/synergy-plus/issues/detail?id=79 and there is already provided package for 32 and 64bit version => don't see any reason not to use their officially packed one (but I might be wrong :)).

For me on karmic 64bit their deb package works fine.

In particular synergy bug 420088 (from jaunty and upwards) and bug 486922 (from karmic and upwards) gives users a ghastly experience with synergy, and there is no upstream at all so these bug will not be fixed; I think those bugs alone are enough to drop "synergy" from both Debian and Ubuntu and replace it with a synergyplus package instead. Or why not just replace the synergy package with a synergy package that contains synergy+ instead (after all it's just a fork, it's the same codebase but with lots of bugs fixed).

You may find debian-mentors faster than REVU.

Acutally, I was planning to give the Ubuntu process a new try, and go for Debian once the package was accepted into Ubuntu. But well, I guess if the REVU time is still too long, i'll once again give up and go for Debian directly.

OK, REVU's too slow, i'm trying Debian Mentors.

I uploaded the package to debian.mentors.net [1] and i'm looking for a sponsor. Would a Debian developer be reading these lines... I'm begging you dear friend! :)

Synergy+ and Synergy have now merged. We should push our next update: 1.3.2.1

1.3.2.1 will be the most stable.

This bug was fixed in the package synergy - 1.3.4-1ubuntu1

synergy (1.3.4-1ubuntu1) natty; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian experimental (LP: #385529, #697985), remaining changes:
    - debian/rules: disable FORTIFY, since fixing the code seems to have
      negative results (see LP 250869 -- Ubuntu specific workaround until
      debian bug 488460 is fully solved).

synergy (1.3.4-1) experimental; urgency=low

  * New upstream version.
  * Set source package version.
  * Update Standards-Version.
  * Fix doc links to "obsolete" docs.
  * Updated documentation and Homepage to reflect the merger
    with synergy-plus.
