synaptic displays a moving column in the middle of the application

i just installed warty at the office. everytime i open synaptic it displays a
moving column right in the middle.
the column takes about 1/4 of all the aplication's space, where the package name
and descriptions should show; it is moving from top to bottom.

the tool bar is there, but nothing works and i have to kill the aplication.
i have reproduced the problems many times, with other aplications running and
trying synaptic alone.

the machine is at the office, but i could send a screenshot on monday if you
would like...

Thanks for your bugreport.

What version of synaptic are you using? If it's not 0.53.4 please update and
tell me if
the problem does persits. If so, please send me a screenshot and your
/root/.synaptic/synaptic.conf
file and tell me what theme for gtk you are using.

synaptic (0.53.4-1ubuntu4) warty; urgency=low

  * various fixes:
    - #1807, #2004: work around a libglade problem that can
                    cause a infinite loop in libglade
    - #1817: patial fixed the help by adding the supported icon
             to the icon-legend panel
    - #1441: fixed by moving to 0.53.4
  * sorting the "supported" column is possible now
