Bug Description
If one enters a malformed repository into Synaptic's software sources list (say you mistype the path, for example), Syanptic becomes unusable because the first it does when launched is look up the software sources, which generates the error:
E: Malformed line xx in source list /etc/apt/
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
The dialog only offers a "Close" button, which shuts Synaptic down.
