I have a similar problem, coincidentally after getting my Printer running with driver in Synaptic, not from Brother, Synaptic crashes. Whether I am trying to let an update run via the Update Manager, or run Synaptic from System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager, I get a pop up window (image attached).
I won't be changing any software until someone knowledgeable can tell me how to fix this!
