Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I'm using maverick Ubuntu 10.10 . Here's the full description I get when starting update manager "Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Read error - read (21: Is a directory)'. I am stuck, couldn't find any thing on web, would be grateful for any help. Just Remember please I am not a fundy so Please explain slowly.

When I try to open synaptic I get This
E: Read error - read (21: Is a directory)

Maybe this can help: I tried Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.11 and got this message:

Moving package to synaptic. It may even be better off in aptitude. To help the ones who take on this bug in synaptic, please run:

apport-collect 734729

To gather your system info.

Hello Johan,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with synaptic. You made this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu has been updated since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know, and in the current version, run the following (only once):
apport-collect BUGNUMBER
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
