Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

I was installing the kde3 packages and had selected "Settings-Files-Delete downloaded packages after installation". kde3 had some problem with sudo, and also there's a left-over problem with chrony trying to start an already running chrony, and so it seems that synaptic generates an error message and then quit the install, the entire install.

The bigger problem, apparently synaptic treats this exercise as an "installation", even though none of the packages actually installed, and then deletes the entire cache - that's an hour of downloading over a slow DSL line.

So, synaptic needs to actually distinguish between an "attempted" installation and an "actual" installation before actually deleting the cached packages.

And why synaptic quit the install after an error, instead of continuing with the other packages - I don't know. Maybe because this was an error installing a meta-package?
