synaptic deletes cache before installing

I was installing the kde3 packages and had selected "Settings-
The bigger problem, apparently synaptic treats this exercise as an "installation", even though none of the packages actually installed, and then deletes the entire cache - that's an hour of downloading over a slow DSL line.
So, synaptic needs to actually distinguish between an "attempted" installation and an "actual" installation before actually deleting the cached packages.
And why synaptic quit the install after an error, instead of continuing with the other packages - I don't know. Maybe because this was an error installing a meta-package?
