I use now mint 8 helena x86 and there's no problem
And you asked what do I type in quick search when synaptic crashes in mint 7 gloria x64
well nothing specific it chrashes whatever I type

Oh boy, my first bug report! This is still very much a problem with my installation -- currently running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x86_64 (2.6.32-23) -- synaptic dies whenever I type anything in the "Search" box with the following:

Remove the apt-xpian-index package complete by
sudo apt-get remove --purge apt-xapian-index

Then reinstall it by
sudo apt-get install apt-xapian-index

That should fix the quick search segfault/crashing error in synpatics package manager.
