To solve this, execute,

sudo rm /var/cache/apt/*.bin

apt related cache and index are somewhat problematic, I personally at least experienced twice. Cause is unknown (or it should be fixed now), the solution is to delete cache and index (and execute #sudo update-apt-xapian-index).

This is still present on Karmic (with all updates). And it is not just Synaptic that crashes. But even apt-get crashes. So it is not possible to recover form this unless the cache is deleted (as specified in Hiker's comment).

It is apt that crashes when the package index is corrupted. I'm closing this report because it is already reported in apt.
