Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

9.04 Distribution Upgrade done today (as per the prompts from the Update Manager) overwrote my pinned version of Pan with the latest repository version.

It also re-installed the Network Manager packages which I had removed previously and did not (ever!) want to use again.

I'd rather not have packages I do not want force installed on my system without my permission.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx
Package: update-manager 1:0.111.9
PackageArchitecture: all
ProcEnviron:
 LANG=en_AU.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: update-manager
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-14-generic x86_64

Thanks for your bugreport.

Could you please attach the log in /var/log/dist-upgrade/* ? It should honor the pinning. On a upgrade it will (re)install ubuntu-desktop, this is why you probably got network-manager, but the logs will tell the details.

BTW, I could not upload the raw apt-term.log file (but the tar.gz was ok), I kept getting an "empty file" error message - now I need to find where I file a Launchpad bug report about Launchpad itself........

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

I have not done a Dist Upgrade since I reported this bug, wait until Ubuntu 10.04 is released and then I can provide more info.

C'mon people, it is unacceptable to expire this bug because I personally have not done an upgrade!

The Upgrade process should NOT change Pinned packages!

Hi David,

Thanks for the additional information. It is because the package is pinned in synaptic, and apt and synaptic use different pinning files.
If you pin the file in /etc/apt/preferences the package won't be upgraded. I've tried and cannot reproduce this issue.

The pinning difference between apt and synaptic is reported in bug 42178 and I'm going to mark this one as duplicate. Don't hesitate to provide information on the main report.

Thanks for your help.
