Bug Description

Displaying "rebuilding search index" in Synaptic isn't really helpful for a user when they don't know what a search index is or what rebuilding it will result in (and I guess there are quite a few people for whom this is the case). A better option would perhaps be telling the user that newer packages might not yet be found using this tool at the current moment. Or not displaying anything at all - if newer packages weren't there before, then it doesn't really matter if the user has to wait a few more moments before he can find them using this tool. (Not sure how often packages are removed and whether this would pose problems.)

As a sidenote, I don't think the text label (most of the times "Quick search") with so little padding stuffed above the search field confirms to the HIG. It at least looks messy.

And while we're at it, this related papercut is also worth taking a look at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+bug/280395

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

Synaptic is being replaced by Appcentre > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AppCenter , you could add your suggestions in the comments page of the wiki.

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the papercuts project.

An option could be to disable the quicksearch during indexing (text entry non editable) and display a simple label like 'Indexing in progress...' in the quicksearch entry
