Bug Description

Hi

I am not able to update from behind a proxy server which needs authentication. I have installed Ubuntu 8.10. My university uses a proxy server which needs to be authenticated.

I have given my login name and password at

System >> Administration >> Synaptic Package Manager >> Settings >> Preferences >> Network >> Manual Proxy Configuration and given my login details in the authenticate tab

I have also added these details in the Network part of Preferences.

However when I use the update manager and click on reload I get a message saying
.

W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/di...tion-en_IN.bz2 Could not resolve 'pradeep.podal'
.
.
where pradeep.podal is my login name.

I tried with a different login ID [my friend's] without a dot in it and the update went past through this stage. It still failed and said that my key is invalid but I believe that is a different issue and can be easily fixed.

I will update with any more details when I get them

Thanks
Pradeep

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in update-manager.

Hello Pradeep.

Does synaptic work when you are using your login and you install a new package? I was wondering whether this is an issue of update-manager only or synaptic as well.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Changed in update-manager:
status: New → Invalid
status: Invalid → Incomplete

Hello Michele

I believe it is a problem of both ....

I am neither able to update not install new software.

I tried looking in the files in which my login name and ID is saved but they were encrypted(gpg) and so did not do much help. May be you can have a look there and see if there is a problem there.

Thanks
Pradeep

I'm not a developer, I'm just triaging bug reports, so I think that I'd be unable to extract useful information by means of looking at those file!

I just want to understand if "update-manager" is the right package for this report so that a developer can start to deal with your problem! Honestly, I don't think that this is the appropriate place for your report, maybe "Synaptic" is the best choice, since you set the username and password for the proxy in Synaptic Package Manager -> Settings. For this reason I'm going to move this report to "synaptic" package.

Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

I need more testing before setting it to triaged.

I cannot reproduce this behavior with the latest development release, Lucid. Could you please give it a try and confirm that it is fixed ?
Thanks.
