Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

When saving a preference, like the proxy for the synaptic or any other, it hangs and remains hanged forever. I nee to kill the proccesses via command line.

The package is Synaptic 0.62.ubuntu10
root@dsolano-laptop:/home/dsolano# lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10
root@dsolano-laptop:/home/dsolano#

I expect that when i hit apply or OK, the changes are saved into the proper config file and continue. My main problem is with the proxy settings, I can not get to change the proxy settings because synaptic is hanging.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10
ExecutablePath: /usr/sbin/synaptic
Package: synaptic 0.62.1ubuntu10
ProcAttrCurrent: unconfined
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: synaptic
Uname: Linux 2.6.24-21-generic i686

You have confirmed your own bug report. Anyway, since i think we got the information we need (thanks for the backtrace), I'm letting it stay as confirmed, so a developer can have a look.

Meanwhile, using the terminal is your workaround:
(sudo) apt-get update (to search for updates)
(sudo) apt-get upgrade (to install updates)
(sudo) apt-get install <package> (to install a package)
(sudo apt-get remove <package> (to remove a package)

I don't if this may help you but i had this problem too. My synaptic (ubuntu 8.10) was always freezing whenever i tried to change any preferences. I solved it by resetting gnome settings to default. I just removed in my home the following dirs:
.gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity
After that i lost my gnome configuration but synaptic was ok.

On jaunty, synaptic freezes most of the times I try to save preferences.

Combined with another bug (reported elsewhere) that involves synaptic "forgetting" certain settings between 2 runs, this is *really* annoying and makes synaptic almost unusable.

Confirmed on Intrepid x86_64

Could someone Please, please fix this?

since my synaptic now hangs up every time I try to reset my
proxy settings to "No proxy", this is VERY important for me,
not "undecided"

I also have the bug that the switch is on "No proxy" and still
synaptic tries to use a proxy, which, as was said before,
makes synaptic Unusable!

So please set the importance to at least medium, so that someone cares to fix it

I have the exact same problem. Upgraded to the Jaunty release this evening; since the upgrade noticed that Synaptic hangs indefinitely if you try to modify preferences and click either Ok or Apply.
Also noticed that CPU usage is extremely high after doing this and the only way out is to kill Synaptic.

Any help here? Does anyone have a work around? I've tried some of the solutions posted including reinstalling synaptic, moving the /root/.synaptic folder etc - nothing has worked so far.

Thanks

I upgraded my 8.10 to 9.04, keeping my /home partition. I aldready had this problem before, thinking upgrading would fix the problem... but it didn't!!
I don't want to delete all the folders mentionned by s.felli (.gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity) but it could be interesting to know which file(s) in these folders need to be deleted. It would allow not to delete all the gnome configuration files.
Any idea?
I plan to backup, then delete them, and see if the problem disappears.

I have this bug too, on Jaunty upgraded from Intrepid. I am seriously thinking never to upgrade again... You never know what strange bug might hit you due to misconfiguration / old config files etc. Could someone please be kind and inform us whether there is any work being done for this bug?
