Synaptic "Quick search" hangs on space character

In intrepid beta liveCD synaptic "quick search" hangs (and eats 100% cpu) when I use space character in search keyword.

I want to type "totem mozilla".. when I start to type "totem", still everything is ok,
but when I came to "totem m", synaptic hangs.

Seems to be fixed in Intrepid final (installed system).
Space no longer hangs synaptic.

A leading space seems to be ignored.
A trailing space tends to reduce the number of hits but sometimes it can actually increase the number of results. Other times it just cancels all results and finds nothing.

Maybe it doesn't hang but it isn't clear if a space becomes part of the search token or whether it is used to select between two different search methods, i.e. one for whole words and another for partial words.

In current Jaunty,
synaptic no longer hangs at space character.
