Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I was unable to recreate this bug. I set my default browser to Epiphany in Preferred Applications and then went to Help -> Report a Problem and Epiphany was used. How did you go about setting your default browser? Thanks in advance.

Like you, using the Gnonme Preferences Capplet...

Did you click on "report a problem" from Synaptic, or some othjer application ?
I ask, because when try on Rhythmbox for example, it does launch Epiphany as expected. It's onlt Synaptic (so far as I can see), that starts firefox, hence I filed this bug against Synaptic and not another application.

Perhaps it has to do with how synaptic is started. Are you starting it from System -> Administration or from the command line? Thanks again.

that's because synaptic is ran using sudo and so doesn't use the current user settings, reassigning to synaptic, that will be fixed when synaptic will run as user and use policykit or similar to do priviledged actions

Could you try the following:

1. Create a file named defaults.list (see attachment)

2. Save under ~/.local/share/applications (create directories if they aren't already there).

3. Restart your Gnome session.

After this, it should be epiphany should be used in place of Firefox... It's not clear Step 3 is needed...

Hi,

I think it's not worth doing anything about it in Hardy, since as Sebastien said, the cause of the problem is known and is a design issue which will (probably) be tackeld in Intredid. So I am happy to leave it at that as far as Hardy is concerned...

Error is indeed an issue, but is by design. Now a usability bug.
