Synaptic 0.90.1 not displaying 'size' package value

Synaptic columns 'Size' and 'Download' shows rectangular symbols instead numerical values.
starting synaptic from terminal i see a lot of messages:

strange behavior, hope it helps:
open synaptic: columns Size and Downoad are emty.
click on 'Search': columns are populated with unreadable characters
