Synaptic will not launch

Bug Description
Synaptic will not launch from either the app menu or the command line.
The synaptic icon in the app menu gives an authentication popup, type in password, hit enter and nothing happens.
From the command line:

After running ubuntu-bug -w, the only place I could click was the desktop.
