Bug Description

Synaptic currently stores various files in ~/.synaptic. Instead it should use
the directories recommended by the XDG specification:

I agree that that probably should be fixed but it doesn't damage the program. The recommendation is a recommendation not a requirement so it can't be a bug surely?

I think we should have Launchpad bugs for any task that is probably worth doing, not just for bugs which damage Synaptic or for hard requirements. There's been a broad push in the GNOME world for all applications to use XDG directories, and I think Synaptic should be no exception. I recommend that this bug stay open.

Note that synaptic is not a part of the GNOME project. It does make
sense to apply the basedir spec. to synaptic, however this is due to
merits of the specification itself, not whether GNOME is pushing for
it.
