Bug Description

After upgrade to Ringtail and reboot I launched synaptic to remove usual self-appointed junk.

I navigated into the category Status -> Not installed (residual config)
There was an entry "libexttextcat-1.0-0", blank, blank, blank.
There was no version information and no description.
The package vanished from the repo and was removed during the upgrade as obsolete.

Any attempt to select it immediately crashes synaptic.
(Mouse, Keyboard.. does not matter)

There is no reason given on the console.
Only *45* times the following line: (*90* lines in total, every other line was blank)
"(synaptic:17010): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkNotebook 0x1a934a0 is mapped but visible child GtkLabel 0x1c92620 is not mapped"

Relevant piece of strace (from the time between click on the entry and crash)
and gdb stack traces are attached.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Changed in synaptic (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed

UPDATE:
I got my hands on another machine that was updated to Raring..

Clicking ANY of the items that have vanished from the repo causes the crash.
Attempt to select them via keyboard also produces the same crash.
These items (by their nature) are only found in the Status->Not Installed (residual config)

Clicking the rest (those have a nonblank "latest version" and "description") is fine.

When I run without sudo the terminal outputs:

(synaptic:5644): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkNotebook 0x12044a0 is mapped but visible child GtkLabel 0x1aad640 is not mapped
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

With sudo "segmentation fault" is absent so it appears:

(synaptic:5681): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkNotebook 0x17684a0 is mapped but visible child GtkLabel 0x1fbf5f0 is not mapped

The strange thing is that SOMETIMES it'll load and sometimes it crashes.

Was fine until Ubuntu base updates today.
