I will investigate tomorrow morning whether there is any chance of getting your fix into Ubuntu 16.04. Like you I am not intimately familiar with the Ubuntu release management process, it's not even clear to me whether non-security bug fixes can be backported to LTS releases. I suppose they _might_ if 1) there are no backwards incompatible changes, 2) the bug is considered critical enough and 3) enough people make their voice heard that they consider it a critical bug :-).
