Erm.. When this happened to me it wasn't really a bug with package sun-java6-jre. What happened to me was that Ubuntu stopped recognizing my mouse clicks and I couldn't get the keyboard to navigate through the installation thing (alt-f would not select Forward) so I had to reboot in the middle of installation to restore mouse functionality.

I've tried uninstalling Open JDK to get sun java, after a complete removal of Open JDK, sun java still refused to install. According to java -version Open JDK 6 Headless is still there...

In my case, mouse clicks still worked, but at 55%, the installation stopped, but at the left side of the screen the swirly showed that it was still in process. I left it all night, and in the morning...no change.
