java plugin not registered in firefox on amd64

after installing sun-java6-jre on amd64 this morning i manually hat to set a symbolic link.

ls .mozilla/plugins
libnpjp2.so -> /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.12/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so

this should not be necessary.

(This is the first java jre that supports a firefox plugin on 64 bit architecture)

I did:
 sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so mozilla-javaplugin.so /usr/lib64/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so 50

And restarted my browser.
Namoroka/Firefox version: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.1pre) Gecko/20100125 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Namoroka/3.6.1pre

And I agree, should not be necessary, but the solution came fast, so for me this only caused me to use Chromium version: 4.0.306.0 (36982) Ubuntu for my java necessities.

Same here, webpages which require Java mention that the plugin is not installed.

My user agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100125 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6

Package sun-java6-plugin (Version 6-16-1) is installed but about:plugins in Firefox does not show the plugin. Also http://www.java.com/de/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1 does no detect the plugin.

This bug also affects me, it solved by the symbolic link manually

I forgot, only affects me in Lucid Lynx AMD64, I worked in perfect x86
