On executing the following command:
>svn co file://./src

subversion crashes with following error, with core dump.

svn: /build/buildd/subversion-1.6.17dfsg/subversion/libsvn_subr/path.c:380: svn_path_basename: Assertion `svn_path_is_canonical(path, pool)' failed.

I'm not really sure if this is a bug or just a weird way of telling you you supplied an invalid url

I agree with Julian, its just not correct way to handle an invalid url.

This was fixed in Subversion's 1.8.4 release. The subversion packages in Trusty and later are new enough to have the fix.
