startup notification doesn't get through gksu

Bug Description

Hello! On my box startup-notification shows an odd behaviour when an app is started through gksu.

- start an app which requires gksu, for example the gnome disk manager;
- provide your password;
- close the app and restart it: the password is now already stored in the gnome keyring, hence the user won't be prompted to re-enter it;
- the app starts up properly, but I get a busy cursor and another istance of the app is shown in the taskbar, which will die out after a few seconds.

I found out this is a problem with startup-notification, in fact toggling the startup-notification flag in the app's desktop file in /usr/share/applications seems to sort it. Synaptic, which comes with no startup notification enabled in its default desktop file, is not affected by this problem. This isn't a showstopper at all, but it's slightly annoying.

Have a nice weekend! Regards, andrea

Same. GNOME startup-notificaton is waiting for gksudo to respond, and it doesn't.

Tricky problem. I've always thought that startup notificaton was just a hack anyway!

i am having the same problem even when starting an app through openoffice's quickstart, an extra istance is started and it then dies out after a few secs

why has no dev commented on this? whenever i report this bug on the forums or here on launchpad i feel demented, as if i were the only humnan being on earth having this problem with the startup notification, but it doesnt seem to be the case since even mr Alex Jones is experiencing the same... regards, andre

If the user is not really switched, the startup notification is received just fine:

$ gksu --user daniel gedit

Changing the user seems to block the notification, though:

$ gksu gedit

Apparently no notification is being received, and the "Starting Administrative Application" message stays in the task list until it hits the timeout.

I think this has already been fixed in feisty. It works for me at least.
