Bug Description

Prior to a recent update, the wireless printer worked fine, now the system settings printing configuration says that "Printing service not available. Start the service on this computer or connect to another server." The "Start Service" button is greyed out leaving just the "Connect" button. When clicked it brings up a dialog asking where the cups server is located, default is localhost, and an unchecked checkbox for "Require encryption." Click the "Continue" button and get an error message: "There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'failed to connect to server'."

Looking at the cups error log, this message is printed:
E [15/Mar/2015:09:26:48 -0400] "/etc/cups/ssl/server.crt" is a bad symlink - No such file or directory
E [15/Mar/2015:09:26:48 -0400] "/etc/cups/ssl/server.key" is a bad symlink - No such file or directory

It seems the ssl-cert package's snakeoil certs were removed by something, reinstalling that package restored the ssl files the above links point to.

So most probably this is not a CUPS bug as the files missing do not belong to CUPS. The bug is probably caused by whatever package which contains the program which removes the files. As the files belong to snakeoil I add a snakeoil task, perhaps the maintainer of snakeoil knows better how these files can disappear.

Sorry, ssl-cert not snakeoil.

What is the value of the 'Listen' variable in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf ?

You can get this value by typing the following command in a terminal:

sudo grep Listen /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

Hello Craig,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with cups. You made this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu and cups have been updated since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 1432414
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and cups better.
