Bug Description

When you have different artists for each track filled in
it is impossible to change the disc artist without having
the per track artists effectively erased. Very annoying
if you've just filled in all those artist names from a
compilation CD...

What do you call "disc artist"? The tags are by file, the disc field is used to tag all the tracks with the same artist. Maybe you want something like http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122367?

This is indeed a user interface thing.

Use case:
New CD that I want to add to my online collection is inserted.
The CD is not recognized so the album/artist/track info has to be filled in manually.
I fill in the Album title and album artist: "Greatest hits 2005" and "Varios".
Next I fill in the track title and track artist for each track.
After I filled in the last track info, I notice the spelling error I made in "Varios".
I change it to "Various" and HEY all my track artists are 'reset' to "Various" which I
 obviously don't want.

The use case above can be avoided if you double check what you fill in.
But sometimes this isn't possible. For instance if you insert a CD, it's recognized
and all the info is filled in automagically and THEN you notice that the person
who filled in the album artist made a spelling error. It's impossible to correct without
clobbering all the track artists.

I think the solution you suggest with a checkbox is fine but the default should be
'non-clobbering' IMHO because you can easily paste the same artist to get the effect
but the reverse is not true.

That does answer the question, and is a small issue, upstream will decide the most convinient way for them to fix it
