Bug Description

Binary package hint: sound-juicer

When trying to extract a CD without supplying the Artist name the
following error is displayed:

Sound Juicer could not extract this CD.
Reason: Failed to create output directory:
    Error creating directory: Permission denied

This message is quite confusing, as there is no problem with
permissions, just the missing Artist. Solution for this issue
could be to provide an "Uknown Artist" default value, or just omit
the Artist from the relative path to be used for the extraction.

Similarly when neither a Title or an Artist are specified, another
irrelevant message is displayed:

Sound Juicer could not extract this CD.
Reason: Could not open resource for reading.

Sound Juicer could not extract this CD.
    Reason: Error starting ripping pipeline

Steps to reproduce:

    1. Preferences -> Folder hiearchy -> Artist, Title
    2. Insert an audio CD
    3. Blank the Artist text box (or Title as well)
    4. Hit the [Extract] button

sound-juicer version: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1

I can confirm sound-juicer *does* display the above mentioned behavior. Setting bug to confirmed.

Same thing happens ("Could not open resource for reading", and so on) if you
have a track name with a colon in it. Classical music tracks quite frequently have
colons in their track names ....

I don't know if this is the same bug - but I ran into what sounds like the same problem (with an album title entered). An strace of the process revealed that it was trying to create a directory under the root directory, named after the album title - which would certainly fail with a permission denied error.

I can confirm that a blank album artist field seems to produce this problem - I can only presume that the directory name is constructed relative to a PWD of the output directory in the form "$artist/$album" - and if $artist is blank then it will try to write to "/$album". I'm working around this by specifying an album artist.

I can confirm this bug. Entering a Album Artist makes it work.

I also confirm this bug. The error message is a bit misleading in this case...

The bug seems to hit when the track or title has a question mark or exclamation too . It may be because I am using saving the files to a FAT 32 partition. They tend not to like symbols like that.

Spent ages trying lots of different output folders until I found this - makes no sense for an empty artist field to cause this error message to be displayed - at least the message should mention blank or invalid characters in the artist/album name may cause this error
