Bug Description

Telstra - Australia's biggest ISP has started a local mirror for Ubuntu Gutsy & Hardy.

Can this be listed as one of the selectable mirrors in software sources to facilitate local traffic?

All branches except multiverse are mirrored.

Probably you need to add the mirror here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archivemirrors.

Apparently http://mirror.gamearena.com.au/ was an early test phase site. No longer functional.

The target site should now be listed as:
http://mirror.files.bigpond.com/ubuntu/

It now contains all repositories for all active releases + "Karmic Koala".

Some more details:
The target site http://mirror.files.bigpond.com/ubuntu/ has been operational since Dec'07.
For those who are Bigpond customers downloads are unmetered (ie. "they don't count towards your monthly usage allowance").
I'm unsure whether or not this site is available to those outside of the Bigpond network. Perhaps someone could check.

Ubuntu ISO's are also available here: http://files.bigpond.com/library/?go=cat&id=812 ...again downloads are unmetered for Bigpond customers. This site may also be unavailable to those outside the Bigpond network???

Correction.
Multiverse is still missing.

Contacted Bigpond regarding missing repository asking whether it is an error or intentional that the repository is not present.

Response as follows:
"It is intentional; we have not got the resources and there are some
lingering legal concerns with the multiverse repository."

Marking invalid as clearly, at this point in time, Bigpond will not operate within required specs for official repo status.

It looks like, at this moment (8-11-2009)

http://mirror.files.bigpond.com/ubuntu/

for the karmic version, does contain multiverse and everything necessary for a full mirror.

Please review, thanks

Today I tried to add this repository to the URL mentioned in #1 (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archivemirrors) but it's already there with a status of "under review". It would be _extremely_ helpful to a large number of Australian users if this repository could be added, even if it still doesn't contain the multiverse repository.

Still not listed under the servers for Australia in software sources, If I can add my vote for it to be added I would like to see it added.

The bigpond links from this report don't seem to work for me, none of them is available, and the Launchpad Mirrors page [1] doesn't show anything mirrored either. Does this mirror still exist? If the URL has been changed, could you let us know the new URL?

If you try to access http://files.bogpond.com/ in your browser, you are redirected to:

http://go.bigpond.com/help/file_library/index.jsp

According to that page, Telstra is now providing unmetered access to AARnet mirrors. From my brief exploration, these seem to include Ubuntu mirrors up to the current released version (11.10).

So, the information on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+mirror/mirror.files.bigpond.com-archive is no longer correct and should probably be deleted or at least updated with a link to the above (bigpond) URL as well as the launchpad page for AARNet: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+mirror/mirror.aarnet.edu.au-archive

HTH,

Rob Hills
