Sam, thanks for your interest. This is part of a GNOME goal to get high contrast app icons for at least the default apps:

microscope -- but should be renamed xdiagnose

You may want to ask around to see if any Ubuntu Touch apps are expected on the Desktop soon (like friends-app).
