Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

Running clean install for today.
Trying to use the software centre to install packages that I want, like Thunderbird and Pidgin so nothing obscure.

I will attached screenshots but:
1) I do not get an 'install' option I get 'use this source'
2) Install fails
3) Asks me to report a problem
4) Problem cannot be reported because: "This is not a genuine Ubuntu package"

Also worth noting that pidgin icon is not displaying.

I have since run the software centre from the terminal and now it is working.

Clues:

1. This was an "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" installation from a USB stick, with "Install updates" and "Install this third-party software" both checked.

2. While the problem was happening:
    - some applications in Main showed up in USC with icons
    - some applications in Main, such as Thunderbird and Pidgin, showed up without icons
    - the screen for anything in Main said "Available from the 'main' source ( Use This Source)"
    - "Use This Source" triggered an apport dialog
    - apport refused to report a bug as described.

3. The problem went away completely as soon as Ivanka chose "Use This Source" for an application in Universe. (So I guess "sudo apt-get update" would have fixed it too.)

1 ... But despite checking "Install this third-party software", the Flash plug-in didn't install either (bug 751666). These bugs may be related, but USC may still need to more gracefully handle the situation where Main is not turned on as a source.

Hey mpt and Ivanka, is this still an open issue? Based on there being a few "me-too's" as well, I will set this as confirmed.

Changed in software-center (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed
importance: Undecided → Low
