Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

I went to install the Calibre Ebook reader from the software centre and I had to first activate the universe source by pressing the "Update Now" button. This does indeed activate the source, however this change is not reflected in the software centre interface, where the "Update Now" button is still visible, rather than the "Install" button. Restarting the software centre does not help. I was however able to download the software using apt-get.

Hi Chris, thanks for your report. So, I was not able to reproduce this issue myself. Are you still encountering this problem or is it now resolved?

I followed these steps:

1. Open Software Center, choose "Edit->Software Sources..." and uncheck the "Community-maintained Open Source software (universe)" checkbox.
2. Click "Close" in the dialog. The "In Progress" item appears in the left pane.
3. Wait for the "In Progress" item to complete.
4. Navigate to the "Calibre" details page.
5. Click the "Use This Source" button.
6. Enter your password in the dialog if required.
7. The "In Progress" item appears in the left pane.
8. When the "In Progress" item disappears, the Calibre details page should be updated and the button should not say "Install".
9. At this point Calibre can be installed.

If you are still seing this problem, please launch software-center from the command line and let me know if your steps (or results) differ from mine. Also, please post cut and paste the command line output if you do still see the problem.

Thanks!

Hi Gary, I realise now that I forgot to mark this as a bug in the Maverick development release. Sorry for the confusion. This is the first bug I've manually reported without using Apport.

Hey Chris, thanks for your reply. No worries; I'm actually also referring to the Maverick development release in my comment as that's where I tried to reproduce the error you are seeing but have been so far unsuccessful. If you follow the steps that I've outlined, do you still see a different result? Or, if you are following a different procedure, would you mind writing up a specific sequence of steps that gives you the failure so that I can try to reproduce?

For your reference, I tried this with version 3.0.2 of Software Center. You can check the version number in Software Center by choosing "Edit -> About" in the menu.

Thanks again for your help!

Hi Gary, unfortunately the bug still persists even after following the
process you outlined earlier. After press the "Use this source" button, the
"Update Now" button is presented but every time I press it, it persists
even after the cache has been updated.

And yes, I am using version 3.0.2 of the Software Centre.
