Bug Description
Binary package hint: software-center
I Opened the Ubuntu Software Center (USC), entered ruby in the search box and pressed enter. After that USC hanged. I am using Ubuntu 10.10, Maverick in my VmWare Fusion 3.1.0 Virtual Box and only had the terminal, Empathy and Firefox 3.6.3 opened at the same time.

The same happened to me on Lucid too, with the maverick software center installed from a PPA, software-center hung on a search for Ruby.
