Bug Description

Feedback from Ivanka: The software-store icon is too "fussy".

In user testing of Ubuntu on 2010-12-15, participants identified the icon as a utilities bag (calculator, calendar) or “world icon” or “settings”.

Changed in software-store (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Medium
assignee: nobody → Otto Greenslade (otto-chaotic)

It's probably more important for the bag to have visible handles than for it to have stuff inside it. Otherwise it looks a little too much like a cheap grocery bag, rather than a good-quality department store bag (the corner store vs. Harrods).

Ivanka mentioned the possibility of using a giftbox (with a ribbon?) instead of a shopping bag. We're considering using a giftbox icon for available updates (preliminary mockup at <>), so that could be consistent, or it could be a clash, depending on your point of view.

Please use a Tango compliant icon so that it will be coherent with the majority of icons.

Kenneth Wimer (kwwii) wrote :

Because Ubuntu doesn't use or ship with Tango icons by default it is more important that this icon fit with the Human set than Tango.

Regarding the gift-wrapped package: not sure how well this fits with "security updates available"

Any updates on this? Do you have some idea of a mockup?

Any reason why the icon needs to be relevant/related to what the program does itself?

The apple store icon is an A made up by 2 pencils and a ruler.

The main thing that captures my interest is the little number in a circle in the top right, which I found out indicates updates are available.

...not to mention that our beloved, crufty old icon still prominently features the old Ubuntu logo. :)

We are well overdue for a new icon and many people have expressed this recently, so I've targeted this for Oneiric in the Software Center UI Enhancements spec:

@Daniel, are you still ok with being the assignee? Please let me know if we need to change that.

Thanks all!
