ubuntu software centre freezes while installing Ubuntu Restricted Extras

Trying to install Ubuntu restricted extras to support audacity on a freshly installed from DVD copy of Ubuntu 14.10

After force quitting the Ubuntu Software Centre, I returned to the Ubuntu Restriced Extras page to find the centre reporting the extra as INSTALLED.
