Softwarcenter fails to install .deb

When i try to install a .deb manually trough softwarecenter it fails (install with dpkg works).
On older ubuntu versions this works flawlessly.

This affects me, too. 100% repeatable on two freshly installed and updated Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit systems.
Everybody who uses chrome will be mystified as to why they can't install it like they're used to.

To repeat:
1. visit https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/
2. click on Install Chrome
3. choose 64 bit deb and click OK
4. Let Software Center install it.
5. After a minute, it will give up
6. Give up on Software Center and install it with sudo dpkg -i.

This looks like a dup of bug 1290228
