I had the same problem installing Google Chrome. Downloaded the google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb from the Google site. Tried to in install via Ubuntu Software Centre. Clicked the Install Icon, the install bar started to run and then after few seconds it reverts back to the Install icon. I tried it a couple of times. Once it actually asked me my password to install as well, but then again reverted back to the Install icon. A search gave me the indications where I:
1. Opened a terminal.
2. cd Downloads the deb file waqs downloaded to that folder
3. I then ran this command: sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb.

This worked perfectly and Google Grome was installed.

There is definately a bug with the software centre.

Also - if you click the option where it can recommend something - the next time you run Software Centre it is unselected
