Bug Description

I used the software center to install steam. I run 12.10 on x86-64 platform, and it appeared to attempt to install the steam64 binary as expected. However, the install failed. Ever since, "apt-get update" has failed with two warnings:

W: Failed to fetch https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/steam64/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/binary-amd64/Packages The requested URL returned error: 403

W: Failed to fetch https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/steam64/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/binary-i386/Packages The requested URL returned error: 403

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

The added sources looks like:

$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/private-ppa.launchpad.net_commercial-ppa-uploaders_steam64_ubuntu.list
deb https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/steam64/ubuntu quantal main #Added by software-center; credentials stored in /etc/apt/auth.conf

The credentials look like:

$ sudo cat /etc/apt/auth.conf

machine private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/steam64/ubuntu login seth-arnold password XXXXXXreplacedXXXXXX

It seems that issue for me was different login names on my Ubuntu One/Launchpad and /etc/apt/auth.conf files (I was changed my Ubuntu One/Launchpad username). After auth.conf login name was corrected apt-get update show no errors.

I soolved this problem thanks to 4'th comment, editing login in /etc/apt/auth.conf in steam string helped me.

The symptoms are identical on my setup, but the fix on comment #4 doesn't work for me - the username just gets reverted when I try to install from USC again. But I did change my username on Ubuntu One in the past and it's the old username (the one I probably purchased under).

You might try to change your username on launchpad and Ubuntu Single Signon (https://login.ubuntu.com/) to the same. Does it work permanently for you then? Because this error occured for me after changing my username on launchpad while Ubunut Single Signon still had the old username. I've changed them to be the same again now and manually edited the "/etc/apt/auth.conf" with "sudo nano /etc/apt/auth.conf" (you must do it with root privileges!). At least after installing a free application on the Ubuntu Software Center, the username in the auth.conf wasn't changed back. So this might be worth a try.
