I originally created my account as simonmcnair+launchpad@sdfsdf.com (example) and then went through the laborious process of changing this back to simonmcnair@sdfsdf.com.
Since I could not log off and log back on to Ubuntu Software centre I could not download the packages as they had my old login username. I could also not change it.
A 'sudo apt-get --purge --reinstall install software-center' failed as the setting was not specific to USC.
I ended up following advice from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/1008289 and modified my login name in /etc/apt/auth.conf.
There need to be a process to login/log off or change username/password. Manual editing will not hack it for your average end user.
