Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

since i mostly use apt-get/synaptic, i hadn't noticed, but almost every time i use the search box in software center, i get a popup that it has crashed and asks if i want to send a bug report. since i've already sent in this bug report, i click cancel but software center remains open and functional. if i enter new terms into the search box, i get another popup that software center has crashed, yet it stays open and i can use it. unfortunately, there are also times when using the search box doesn't cause a crash, and i can't tell if it is a certain string that is causing the crash or not. while typing up this response, i first searched for "ab" and it crashed, then i tried some others like "abc" and "ba" and also crashed. when i tried "hello" there was no crash, but then tried "ab" again and no crash also.
