Bug Description

I noticed this in a Java Swing application I was packaging, and also on the ubuntu-calculator-app snap.

When moving the mouse cursor over the windows of those snaps, the cursor theme is different (black cursor instead of a white cursor).
This doesn't happen in the tic-tac-toe snap, though.

Polarr chose to use Snap in part because it works cross platform, but the version in the AUR is not a Snap because the Snap doesn't match the system theme. We were contacted by the Arch community maintainer Kisuke-CZE seeking to fix this. To quote his comment at https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/polarr/#comment-629750:

"Unfortunately snap version is poorly integrated with my DE in Arch. So I decided to convert that snap package to standard ArchLinux package which I now published. Hope this PKGBUILD will work for you as well. (I am not sure with the link for downloading package, but worked for me on two diferrent computers)"

The issue was fixed in the desktop launcher for snap using the gnome runtime by that commit

that's not a solution for other snaps by can be used as a trick until snapd properly solves the issue

Happens on all snap-app-GUIs. Completely ruins the snaps. Should be treated as top priority.
Furthermore it doesn adopt the native font and its size which further enhances the oddness..

Could this be an Electron issue rather than snap?

I think ichii is right. I just switched Mailspring from Snap version to regular Debian package and the mouse cursor is still too small. This must be an Electron bug.

There are (at least) two aspects to this:

1. people are always going to be able to use themes that are not available to snapped apps. This one we can't fix, but we do have plans to add "theme" snaps. Not really a snapd issue, although some support to make things automagic might be needed.

2. some snaps that could use themes haven't taken the extra steps to do so. Again not a snapd issue, although we are encouraging people to do this work (and have tried to make it as simple as possible).

I'm setting the bug to Invalid for snapd, which doesn't mean the bug itself is invalid -- it's just not something that snapd itself can fix.

Changed in snapd (Ubuntu):
status: Triaged → Invalid
Changed in snappy:
status: New → Invalid

I am using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and the problem is still there in different apps using SNAP to install it. As far as I know the struggling apps are: Spotify, Chromium, Mailspring, Postman, VLC and Octave. Not every app seems to have the problem the apps that I have installed without problem was: Audacity, Intelijj IDEA, GIMP, LibreOffice, Skype, DrawIO, KdenLive and VSCode.

I hope you can find a sooner solution, it seems careless but if you have a HiDPI display, the cursos is almost invisible.

Not sure if this is with everyone.. but, the mouse pointer is a black hand, when pointed in the list of groups area & a black arrow, when pointed in the messaging area.

(Personal opinion: I believe it is these kind of petty things (ex. (esp.) LibreOffice imperfections/inconsistencies) why Windows users (desktop) are reluctant to switch to Linux. And, how & why MS managed to build a distro on its own)
