I got this error and the modem is not working at all. However if I am using smstools_3.1.10-0.1_amd64.deb from 10.10 or using latest package from Karmic Koala the modem is working perfectly.

Experienced same problem. According to the package website, versions prior to 3.1.9 are broken om 64-bit platforms due to relying on un-documented behaviour of the libc strcpy(). Package should probably be upgraded to 3.1.9.
