Bug Description

SMplayer got a critical regression bug in smplayer package in 11.10 so I've got few complains from my friends who used to use it to watch videos and they complain they cannot watch them after upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10. Simple google search gave me a hint, I've made a custom package, installed it on 3 computers of my friends and my friends are satisfied now.

Bug consists of extra patch which was included in version 0.6.9-2 (ubuntu 11.04 has 0.6.9-1 and ubuntu 11.10 has 0.6.9-4). That patch adds "ffodivxvdpau" to list of default codecs on call to mplayer. It sounds good as it can lower CPU usage if used with decent video card (Nvidia GeForce 210 and newer). But it fails if used with not-so-decent video cards such as Nvidia GeForce 8xxx, 9xxx, ION, GTX 2xx - those cards have vdpau but don't support HW decoding of DivX/XviD streams. Ironically users who have more decent video usually also have more decent CPU which isn't loaded a lot with decoding such video by CPU means. And since it makes most of AVI files unplayable anymore on many of "office type" desktops, we just lost the effort of that patch. It's too big regression and I ask you to rollback the patch ASAP. Also I've found that developers of smplayer are aware of that bug already so I think that patch will be never needed as required tests and changes will be made in smplayer upstream.

Thank you in advance.

I have same problem. After upgrade to 11.10 I can not use vdpau anymore. I have checked that manually runed mplayer just with -vo vdpau option works good, but when it runs from SMplayer it returns:

Your problem is different from mine because I've got files with divx/xvid content unplayable and there were no problems with cache for me but yours is avc1 one and you've got problem with cache so I think you have to file another bug for that instead.

Does "The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec." qualify? Here is error log.

In your case mplayer gets SIGSEGV (signal number 11) - see your log. Try to use official mplayer package (mplayer 2:1.0~rc4.dfsg1+svn33713-1) instead of that amateur clone named mplayer2 and I think your problem will be gone.
