smplayer kills the X server

Bug Description

Binary package hint: smplayer

Starting smplayer kills the X server and returns me to the log on screen. smplayer appears briefly (0.5s) then whole screen goes black and returns me to the log on screen. All open programmes and windows are now closed. It happens every time.

kmplayer and vlc also cause the same problem
totem does not

This appears to be a problem with the nvidea drivers. Both options offered, current version and version 173, cause this. Removing the nvidea drivers and using the Ubuntu ones stops the problem.
