SMPlayer can't correct detect version of installed mplayer

I installed mplayer and smplayer as a GUI frontend to mplayer, but when I start smplayer, it reports that it is obsolete, and the mplayer that is installed with it 'too new'.

smplayer reports 0.6.8, while mplayer reports MPlayer SVN-r1.0~rc3+svn20090426-4.4.3

my expectation would be that these packages would be in sync...

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. Actually the mplayer build in lucid is not obsolete, but it seems the ubuntu developers changed the mplayer identification string and smplayer fails to recognize the mplayer version.

smplayer expects something like this:

MPlayer SVN-r31037-3.3.4 (C) 2000-2010 MPlayer Team

I think the mplayer package in my PPA doesn't have this problem:

what's the problem with smplayer and mplayer not reporting the same version?

smplayer is a frontend to mplayer and is developed pretty much independently. So this is not exactly suprising to me

The bug here is that mplayer in Ubuntu reports the version number in a different format from the upstream mplayer, confusing smplayer and making it think mplayer is outdated.

what would be a better format?

please note that we ship release branches, not trunk. I think we should
better fix smplayer to not be that confused instead.

Also same issue with fresh mplayer 1.0rc4 and SMPlayer 0.6.9.1 in Maverick.

Confirming bug

PLease look at:

 * If a version is not recognized, assume it's an old version instead of new.
   This way at least the file will play.
 * Now smplayer should recognize the mplayer version from ubuntu packages
   (MPlayer 2:1.0~rc1-0ubuntu13.1 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team).
 * Changed some defaults in preferences: framedrop will be enabled, and
   subtitles on screenshots disabled.
