Are you sure this happen with mplayer too?
I've just compiled the latest svn (35369) and -fontconfig is still working.

For mplayer2, yes they removed that option some months ago, and now smplayer (from svn r4683) doesn't use -fontconfig with mplayer2.

So the problem in smplayer is fixed, but you need the very latest version from svn.

I'm having the same problem when using smplayer, too. It started just a few days ago.

But it works fine when I open mplayer2 via terminal. I'm unaware of the versions of my software, but everything seems uptated to at least a few hours ago via update manager (Ubuntu 12.04).
I just use the command $ mplayer2 <file>

I unchecked "Subtitles > Use SSA/ASS library" and now it is able to open.
A quickfix until the problem is solved, and a hint to the ones who will repair it, or at leasts I hope so.

While this bug is being looked at, for my ubuntu setup, I installed smplayer2 (currently available via ppa at https://launchpad.net/~smplayer2/+archive/daily ) . And using that one with mplayer2 seems to avoid this fontconfig issue.
