Also occurs in a Jaunty alpha6 fresh install - launching KPackage appears to have triggered it.

Please try:

sudo smart update
sudo smart search

The last command will list all packages in all repositories. You can switch to another terminal while it runs: the goal is to see if it will crash with the unicode error before it finishes.

I have same problems as the reporter in my 9.04 jaunty beta.
Those two commands in upper post returned no errors in console, but I did't use smart package manager when this error occurs... I had crash while running KPackage as a frontend.

Interesting, I didn't know kpackage used smart.

Anyway, I get the backtrace in jaunty when running smart search in the pt_BR locale, and also the "C" locale.

Apparently I don't get it when *not* redirecting output elsewhere, or it's just too fast in my screen and I don't see it. It looks like it has something to do with the clustalx package:
# smart search

'Twas an attempt to install a Java-Based Desktop-Environment which lead to this difficulty, from the downloaded debs. This process did involve the use of kpackage.

This does happen with the KDE in those Daytime-hours when I desire to listen to the audio part of multimedia, otherwise all sound-experience with the exception of Beep would be gone. That program called Beep does instruct the internal speaker to make the sound of beep, which is the sound which does work in those other Desktop-Environments.

This is part of my starting KDE with my receiving an error message as first notification of a program, having been started. After the filing of these error-reports, I'll find some items of greater interest to me, to do.

I sensed this bug might affect me today, there's that group which will accuse me of using some paranormal-power to perceive this. The morning coffee was had before starting the computer, so I could drop the load before doing these reports. This is one of those routine difficulties in my home office, for a personal-use system.

I've recently built some packages for this fork, needed in order for the machine to run at an acceptable speed. Those were taken from the accepted Ubuntu source files.
