Forgive me if I'm missing something but from http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/s/sl-modem/ it seems that only amd64 versions are built and no i386. I try with -7 and receive the same error.

I built from the source and it built and installed fine, however, now I can access /dev/ttySL0 via minicom, but any attempt to dial, answer, or any such activity results in NO CARRIER then ERROR
