I tried removing pulseaudio, and also installing esound, none of which helped.

Neither am I playing any sound in any other application.

I had it working once, it might have been related to installing other software such as pidgin and empathy, but I'm not sure of that.

Hi, a new skype version 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 is available, could you please try if you still have the bug with the new version?

If you still have this problem please set the status back to "new".

thanks

Had the same problem and was able to solve it by installing the 32bit version of the libasound2-plugin module:

  sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins:i386

It seems it is a problem of some missing files in the 64bit version (or respectively of some files that are not needed any more in the 64bit version but nevertheless used by skype)

With skype 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu 12.10, the error still occurs.

Then I tried "sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins:i386" and it seems to solve the issue..

The same as alFReD NSH, 13.10, 64 bit. Fixed after install of libasound2-plugins:i386. Maybe the part of the libs needed can go in a plugin or as a part of the standard ubuntu install. It is only a library after all.

For what it's worth I had the same problem in Ubuntu 12.04, 64 bit, and could also fix it by installing libasound2-plugins:i386
