Bug Description

Skype application crashes when sending files (no matter small or big). The other side is MS Windows. Although receiving the files is quite normal.

Tested it on latest version 4.0.0.8 and tried earlier releases as well. They all get crashed while I try to send a file. Ubuntu is 12.04.

I can see a crash report in /var/crash by the name "_usr_bin_skype.1000.crash" whose size is approx. 28 MB. This is, what ive read is created by apport. If this report is of value, I dont know how to upload it >???

Pardon for delay.

I have never used tracing, so after a bit of googling and reading a couple of man pages, got "apport-retrace" tool installed from ubuntu software center.

Launched skype, tried to send the file, skype crashed, crash report generated in /var/crash, used "apport-retrace -o Skypetrace _usr_bin_skype.1000.crash" command. But there comes an error

"apport-retrace -o Skypetrace _usr_bin_skype.1000.crash
ERROR: report file does not contain one of the required fields: CoreDump DistroRelease Package ExecutablePath"

Am I doing what you have asked....?

It's ok, no problem!

Maybe wiping out your .Skype directory helps?

try
mv ~/.Skype ~/.Skype.backup

Just did what you suggested. Removed the ~/.Skype directory.

No change. As soon as I try to select a file (to send) from file selection menu in Skype, the application is crashed.

Strange, that it was not replicated on your side though on 64 bit.

Anyways, I have downloaded and installed debian version 4.0.0.8 with clean home directory.

Replicated the scenario and BANG.

It crashed the same way. :(

Just checked the link. And did a bit of searching. That bug is already reported with closed status. The solution described there was to change style settings. But I've tried every style and it still crashes.

Although Ive posted my comments there. (in closed status thread) :)

Hi, a new skype version 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 is available, could you please try if you still have the bug with the new version?

If you still have this problem please set the status back to "new".

thanks

I've tested the functionality on 4.1.0.20 and it crashes nonetheless.

Interesting facts. I stumbled upon the following thread

http://community.skype.com/t5/Linux/...ght/true#M3172

and using some rational found that if skype is launched with root like "gksudo skype" or "sudo skype", then not only interface is more elegant but file transfer function works as well. Now I can send the file no matter how big is the size.

However, I don't want to run the skype with root privileges. Can someone find out any alternative to it.????

My apologies for getting back to this bug after a long time. Here is what I've to share that I had come across some months back but could not find enough time to report it here (glad I'm doing it now). Though I have reported it on ubuntuforums.

Here it is:

If I start the skype with super user privileges, it works perfectly. Strangely enough the application interface also gets a bit changed. More sharp and sleazy. Moreover, the file sending also gets underway smoothly no matter how big the size. But again if I run skype without "su" the "file send crash problem" arises.

I've also tried to do some work on file like for wireshark to capture and display packets we have to

sudo chgrp XXXXX /usr/bin/dumpcap
sudo chmod 754 /usr/bin/dumpcap
sudo setcap 'CAP_NET_RAW+eip CAP_NET_ADMIN+eip' /usr/bin/dumpcap

Don't know what to do in case of Skype

Hope this might be helpful towards diagnosis of the problem.

The problem remains in Skype™ Version 4.3.0.37.
It seems like the application tries to get access to not allocated memory, for sometimes it freezes but not just crashes. So I think that the problem may depend on what I have done with the application before sending the file, i.e. on the history. And what other error may be so sensitive to what an application has loaded?
