This upgrade potentially solves so many problems that are impossible to fix due to the closed source nature of the Skype application that I think we should prepare a stable release update (SRU) for this upgrade:

Skype is not free software and can't legally be distributed by anyone without an agreement from Skype. The current packages are in the Canonical partner archive and not in Ubuntu. Canonical will have to update the package.

What I hoped to find in this bug report is some indication when the new version is likely to appear in the Canonical repo. Deas someone know whether it's days, weeks, months, after some OK from Skype, never? Thank you.

@ papukalja

Changing the bug-header is the common way to tell the bug-tracker that this is a special request and not a software failure, thus it helps to sort it out and accellerate the common process.

please consult the documentation

Guys, another gift from microsoft: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/07/skype-push-out-new-bug-fix-update
IMHO it will be best to have latest skype packages in repositories (precise + quantal) > normal users don't take care about version of package - they just click install in software center and when they see skype from year 0 heart attack usually comes.

Does anybody know how the process of pushing packages to the partner repo is handled? Seems to be unheard here...

Woohoo! I see 4.0.0.8 for lucid and oneric in http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/pool/partner/s/skype/ Just waiting for natty so I can upgrade.

By the way...when I did a apt-get upgrade it told me it was going to install the version for lucid. Is that because not all the packages are there, or is there glitch in the package indexes?

Thanks so much!

The package was identical for lucid and natty, so the lucid package has now
been published in both the lucid and natty archives instead of pushing an
unnecessary rebuild to each release. Likewise, the oneiric, precise, and
quantal releases use the same package.

Basically, if you can see the package available for the release you're
running (through update-manager / Ubuntu Software Center), it's meant to be
used, regardless of what the version number looks like.

For the next revision, I'll try to make sure we get less confusing version
numbers.
